CII declares RGIA as Excellent Energy Efficient Unit

  • GHIAL receives the award for its focus on energy sustainability

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL), which operates Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad has been awarded the “Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” at the prestigious 18th National Award for ‘Excellence’ in Energy Management organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), Hyderabad. Mr. Buddhadeb Shome representing GHIAL has collected the award from Mr. Ajay Mishra IAS, Spl. Chief Secretary - Energy Division, Government of Telangana at a ceremony held today at HICC.

Held from 30 August to 1 September 2017, the event focused on recognising companies that are engaged in energy efficiency initiatives by adopting best practices and technological advancement in their daily operations in turn displaying commitment towards Energy conservation. GHIAL was shortlisted among the few companies that have adopted best energy conservation initiatives at the Award conference. This was followed by a presentation on, “GHIAL’s commitment towards energy efficiency during the surge in passenger traffic”. The presentation focused of various measures adopted at Hyderabad Airport such as conversion of Halogen lights to LED, installation of ozone safe air conditioning and super fans, using solar energy for energy requirement and adopting innovative approaches through “Passenger is Prime” initiative.

Speaking on this recognition, Mr. SGK Kishore, CEO, GHIAL, said, “We are delighted to receive the award and this reaffirms our commitment to serve passengers even better by making best use of the energy resources available. As a responsible corporate citizen GHIAL is committed to exploring energy efficient solutions. As a part of our Passenger is Prime initiative, we have deployed eco-friendly vehicles such as electricity powered buggys, ground handler vehicles, trolley movers, and have even commissioned e-cars.”

The presentation concluded with observations in energy savings of around 14.8 MU over the last three years and a drastic decline in the GHG emissions after adopting the various measures at the Airport. The jury, CII members, and people from the industry complimented and appreciated the initiatives of GHIAL. This is the third time for GHIAL to be declared as an ‘Excellent Energy Efficient Unit’ in the National Award for Excellence in Energy Management as they have won the same in 2014 and 2015.

Hyderabad Airport has won numerous environment related awards viz. CAPA Chairman’s Order of Merit for Environment Sustainability 2017, Golden Peacock Environment Management Award 2015, “Certificate of Merit” in National Energy Conservation Awards 2011 from Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Govt. of India; Best Airport Environmental Performance of the Year” by Center for Asia Pacific Aviation’s (CAPA) in 2009.
