GMR Hyderabad International Airport Wins the Prestigious CAPA Chairman’s Order of Merit for Environment Sustainability

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL), which operates Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad has won the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) Chairman’s Order of Merit for its focus on environmental sustainability and becoming the First Airport in Asia Pacific in its category to become carbon neutral. GHIAL received the award during the CAPA 12th Annual India Aviation Summit held in Mumbai on 8th February. CAPA India is a leading specialist aviation consulting and research practice in South Asia, with the region’s largest team of analysts and a portfolio of more than 125 advisory and research projects.

Speaking on this recognition, Mr. SGK Kishore, CEO, GHIAL, said, “We are happy to have been recognized by CAPA for our efforts in the area of environmental sustainability and carbon footprint reduction. We see this recognition by CAPA as a big endorsement of our focus on these critical aspects of our business. Recently, Level3+ Neutrality status was awarded to Hyderabad Airport by Airports Council International (ACI) under its Airport Carbon Accreditation program, which is a significant achievement for us. CAPA Award is a testimony to our sustained efforts towards environment protection through proactive energy conservation measures, generation of renewable energy (Solar), carbon sinking through extensive greenbelt and various other environment protection measures with the active support of the airport’s stakeholders.”

Airports Council International (ACI) certified Hyderabad International Airport with Level 3+, Neutrality under its Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme is the industry standard for assessment of airports' efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions. Hyderabad Airport progressively achieved the ACI’s accreditations starting from achieving Level 1 and Level 2 which are Mapping and Reduction respectively, in 2012. The airport gained Level 3 status of Optmisation in 2013. In Dec 2016 GHIAL has achieved Level 3+ Neutrality, which is the fourth and the highest accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme of ACI.

GHIAL has been actively working towards environment sustenance and emission controls at Hyderabad International Airport. Commissioning of the 5 MW solar power plant for the captive use of Hyderabad Airport and various energy conservation measures such as planning and execution for LED lights for entire airport, Building Automation System, optimization of air conditioning units, vast green cover around the airport among others have helped the airport consistently reduce its carbon footprint. Hyderabad Airport has won numerous environment related awards viz. Golden Peacock Environment Management Award, 2015; Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Award for “Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” during the 15th and 16th National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2014 and 2015.
